Join Dr. Adria Updike assistant professor of Physics at Roger Williams as she leads stargazers on a special nighttime walk through the Farm trails and out to Cove Cabin. Equinoxes, or "equal nights", occur twice a year as everyone on Earth experiences 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of the night. Learn to identify common constellations, locate the North Star and bright planets, and discuss the life cycles of stars from birth to often violent ends. Weather permitting, we'll take a look at the sky through a telescope.
About Dr. Updike: Adria has a bachelors degree from Smith College in physics and astronomy and did her masters and PhD in physics at Clemson University. She did her postdoctoral work at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in the Observational Cosmology Lab, and is currently a tenured professor of physics at Roger Williams University. Her areas of research include gamma ray bursts (giant stars exploding halfway across the universe), galactic chemical evolution, and physics education research.
