La Gondola, Marcello's authentic gondola company, has become one of the most recognized and beloved attractions in Providence with gondolas on the Providence River. Marcello will be accompanied by his brother, Alessandro, and they will sing some Italian songs.
Join us for a fun evening learning about the Italian gondola tradition, some memorable stories of Marcello's time on the Providence River and why he thinks being a gondolier is the most romantic job in the world. He will also discuss becoming a gondolier here as well as in Venezia (Venice).
The "Cynthia Julia" is Providence’s first gondola and is believed to be the first truly authentic Venetian gondola ever built in the United States. The gondola’s design is from the 19th century and is adorned with hand-sculpted ornaments and more than 250 feet of solid brass trim.
The "Bella Donna", their second gondola, was built in Venice in 2001 by Dei Rossi. It was brought to New Orleans and was actually utilized during Hurricane Katrina to rescue stranded people during that storm. It was brought to Providence and restored in 2006.
Mount Hope Farm, 250 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI, is hosting the Gondola Lecture in its Civil War era barn. The event is free to members and $10 for non-members. Click here to buy tickets on Eventbrite or call the Farm at 401.254.1745.
